Back Pain - 7 Potentially Fatal Causes

Your back hurts. So what? Everybody has a little back pain now and then.

But what if it could kill you?

Most people suffer back pain as the result of daily stresses on the structural support of the body: the bones, discs, muscles, and ligaments in and around the spine. Just as a car gets rusty with age, the human body succumbs to the effects of gravity over the years. Aches and sprains, muscle pulls and strains, are part of life from middle-age onward.
However, back pain may be the result of other abnormalities within the body, several of which can cause death, whether in minutes or years. It's wise to think twice when your back starts hurting. Was it too much yardwork over the weekend or perhaps something else?

Here are 7 potentially fatal causes of back pain:

1. Aortic aneurysm. The large artery that carries blood away from the heart sometimes weakens with age and balloons outward, like a weak spot on a tire. If the aorta ruptures, massive internal bleeding may occur, sometimes causing death within minutes. Fairly often the pain from a damaged aorta is felt the back. If the vessel is stretching slowly with time, the pain may be chronic or intermittent in nature. If the vessel is rupturing quickly, the pain is usually intense and accompanied by other symptoms such as weakness, abdominal pain, and faintness. If you have a strange back pain, different than your usual pattern, it's best to consult your doctor. If the pain is abrupt and severe, call 911.

2. Cancer and tumors. Both cancer originating in the bones of the back and cancer that spreads to the back from another location commonly cause back pain. A benign tumor of the spinal cord and vertebrae may also produce pain, as the enlarging mass presses on sensitive structures. The pain may occur with movement or at rest, but tends to worsen over time and may be severe. Any back pain that persists or worsens with time should be professionally evaluated.

3. Infection. When bacteria invade the deep structures of the body, such as the bones, discs, and spinal cord, serious infection may ensue. These infections are fairly uncommon and may go unrecognized until the process is quite advanced. Kidney and lung infections may cause back pain as well, and are often dismissed as nothing more than a back strain. When any of these conditions is untreated, bacteria may enter the blood stream and cause sepsis, a potentially fatal infection of the blood. When infection is the cause of back pain, other symptoms may be present as well, for example fever, nausea, and sweating. Again, see your doctor if these symptoms occur.

4. Pancreatitis. When the pancreas becomes inflamed for whatever reason, the enzymes that are designed to help digest your food may begin digesting your own body instead. Usually this produces nausea, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain, but may produce back pain as well. Pancreatitis may cause internal bleeding, dehydration, elevated blood sugar, electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, and death. Alcohol abuse and gallstones are among the common causes. Call your doctor or go to the ER if you experience these symptoms.

5. Penetrating ulcer. Just as pancreatic juices may eat through the pancreas and other abdominal structures, so may stomach acid burn a hole through the duodenum or stomach. When this happens, internal bleeding occurs and the stomach contents spill into the abdominal cavity, where they cause further destruction and infection. The pain of an ulcer may be felt in the abdomen, the chest, or the back. Heartburn or stomach pain in association with back pain may be an indication of an ulcer and should be evaluated by a physician.

6. Inflammatory bowel disease. When the colon is inflamed the pain may be experienced in the abdomen, pelvis, or back. Inflammation may cause the bowel to perforate, similar to an ulcer, or cause a bowel obstruction. Either of these conditions is potentially fatal. Seek professional care for any abdominal pain accompanied by back pain.

7. Pulmonary embolism. Blood clots usually form deep inside the legs, where they may cause leg swelling, discomfort, and sometimes redness. When a clot dislodges and moves upward through the heart into the lungs, chest pain and/or back pain may occur, usually along with difficulty breathing. If the clot is large, it may obstruct air exchange and result in too little oxygen in the blood. Sudden onset of back pain associated with difficulty breathing may be a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs) or even a heart attack. Don't drive yourself to the hospital - call 911.

The above examples illustrate that not all back pain is a simple matter. Fortunately, all of these conditions are fairly rare. If you've found your symptoms on the list, seek prompt medical attention.

On the other hand, if you have the same back pain that you get every time you weed your garden or mop the floor, take an aspirin and call your doctor in the morning.

Back Pain Treatment - Ways to Say Goodbye to Your Back Pain

By Tom Charles

If you are in pain, there are several options for back pain treatment. Many of the solutions depend upon how you injured yourself or how much pain you are in. People pain in their backs for a variety of reasons. The majority of the problems stem from injuries, such as sport related injuries, work related injuries, or other accidents. Others may come from aging, obesity, genetics, or even poor posture.

The longevity of the pain and how much pain you are currently experiencing will more than likely influence your choice of back pain treatment. Let's get on to some of the more popular methods of treating your pain.

One of the best treatments if you've just started experiencing pain is good old fashioned rest and application of an ice pack or a heating pad. Rest and an ice pack can help with any inflammation in the back, while a heating pad will help to sooth your muscles. To help reduce inflammation more and reduce pain, aspirin may be taken or some other anti-inflammatory drug.

If you are overweight, you need to change your lifestyle. Adding in a healthy diet and regular exercise will help you to lose those extra pounds. Excess weight puts a lot of pressure on your spine, and just losing a few pounds should help your back start to feel better.

Seeing a physical therapist or a chiropractor is another option. A physical therapist will help with an exercise program that will help to relieve pain and strengthen your back. They may also provide treatments such as whirlpool baths, and massage to ease the pain. A chiropractor will adjust your back giving you immediate and long term back pain relief.

Another important treatment for your back is exercise. Adding in exercise will help with benefits that go beyond just helping your immediate back pain; it will also help strengthen your back and also help you if you need to lose a few pounds. Start off slow with a bit of aerobic exercise like walking or swimming, then slowly build up to longer duration and more intense exercises like running or biking.

Along with aerobic exercise it is important to add in stretching exercises, or even Pilates or yoga classes. Programs such as these will give your back better strength and flexibility, which will help ease your current pain and help to ward off any future back issues.

The last resort for any back problems would involve surgery, and only your doctor can tell you if you have reached this point and there is no other alternative.

These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to possible back pain treatments. There are several more exercises and things you can do to help your back feel great once again. There is no need to go through life suffering with back issues, make sure to do what you can to strengthen you back and relieve your pain.

Back Pain - Causes and Cures

By Deborah Neil

Back pain can be caused by many things. A common cause is a slipped disc. Your spine is composed of vertebrae, which are the bones and the disc that is supposed to act as a cushion between your bones.

The disc is made of connective tissue with fluid lubricating it. You could see the disc as a shock absorber. The disc protects the bones in your spine from rubbing together.

Sometimes the disc is not healthy and a sudden movement can cause it to "slip out". The disc, which is the cushion and soft portion has now slipped out. It can either slip a little where you have less of a cushion and a little pain, or it can slip out so badly that it hits a nerve and cuts of nerve flow. If it is this bad, it can cut off nerve flow to anywhere in your body causing numbness and tingling.

Discs become brittle over time. There is no proven cause, however, my theory is that we do not move enough and stretch enough, so the tissue does not get the movement it needs to stay lubricated. Think of an engine part drying out and losing oil. The parts would freeze up and become brittle. Soon, they would no longer move. They would also likely break because they are no longer soft, they dry out.

Your connective tissue is your tendons and ligaments, the cushion in your knee joint and the cushion between the bones in your back. All the bones are held together with connective tissue and the muscles are held to the bones with connective tissue. An irritation in this connective tissue that does not heal can become chronically inflamed and develop scar tissue.

There are solutions to pain and inflammation in your joints. Glucosamine sulfate is the best answer to joint problems. It is important to use Glucosamine SULFATE. There are various types of glucosamine. Glucosamine hydrochloride or HCL is cheaper than the sulfate type, so often it is used in supplements. If you have taken glucosamine before and did not get any benefit, perhaps it was the wrong type and you could try the right type to see if that helps.

Glucosamine has a natural anti-inflammatory action that can often be felt the same day you use it. Even if you do not feel it immediately, it is working to rebuild your connective tissue. Your body uses that as the raw material to build and repair tissue. If you take this long term, you will be far less likely to suffer joint issues. Your body can heal itself if you give it the right tools.

Tight muscles are another cause of back pain. When you sit still all day, the muscles are not stretched and they get tight and put pressure on the discs in your back and that puts pressure on the nerves. The best thing to do is to stretch. Bend over and touch your toes and move around a bit. You can be injured from just sitting still. In fact, it is easier to be injured from sitting still as your body was designed to be moved.

Sitting still at your desk all day can make your muscles tighten more each day. Eventually, they can be so tight that they compress the nerves and you get nerve inflammation and pain. There are herbs that relax the muscles such as corydalis. This is a popular Chinese herb for muscles spasms and cramps. Gentiana root is also popular. It is used as a natural anti-inflammatory. In Chinese medicine, it is considered to "clear heat". You could see heat as modern inflammation.

There is one caveat on glucosamine sulfate. It is usually derived from shellfish, so if you have an allergy to shellfish, please do not take it.

Deborah Neil has a Master's Degree in Oriental Medicine. Her goal is to educate people about Chinese Medicine. Chinese Medicine is the primary form of health care in China and has been used for thousands of years. It can be used to treat just about any ailment, because it treats the root cause, not the symptom.
